A walk from Kexby to Stamford Bridge with some students from York University. We travelled by the X46 service bus from York Railway Station. At Kexby we had to join the queue of traffic at some road works. The only thing in the cordoned off area was a van with traffic cones on it, no sign of any work on the road!!
We walked towards the River Derwent, climbed over the crash barrier and walked along the footpath by the side of the river.
Looking back towards the road bridge. After about 100 yards we came across a pool of water, which we presumed was caused by the river flooding.
We saw mallard and a little egret. When we reached the next field, where there was another pool of water, we saw several greylag geese and then a duck flew in and as we watched it swimming around we were able to identify it as a male mandarin, my first one this year.
The river level was quite high and we could hear and then see a chiffchaff. There were several stiles to cross on our journey and we had to divert way from the river due to flooding at a couple of points. When we were about level with Low Catton we heard and eventually saw a willow warbler as it flew from one tree to another. Year tick number 2.
Just after this we saw a swallow flying down river, year tick number 3. We were then close to Stamford Bridge and could see the viaduct.
We came across a field with sheep and lambs in it.
Our route took us under the viaduct and to the road bridge.
A very pleasant walk with good company and 3 year ticks as a bonus. W e then caught the No,10 bus back to York.
