Black grouse

This picture taken near Langdon Beck does not reflect how misty, windy and rainy it was!

Ian, Gerald and I had a day out in the North Pennines. It rained a little on the way but as we got closer to our target area the mist and drizzle got worse and the wind was strong.

However we did manage to see black grouse at two different sites and got within about 50 yards of the birds at one point. I am surprised at how well the photos turned out.

The birds were in a field next to the main road, so we did not stop long as there was no suitable spot to park the cars. As the weather was not improving we decided to call in at Nosterfield on our way home.

The weather here was more pleasant and we spent a couple of hours in the hide.

Despite the weather, I managed to add three birds to my year last.

Thanks to Gerald and Ian for their company and Ian for doing the driving.
