Black-winged pratincole

Had a day out bird watching with Stu, who is on holiday. I drove to his house and then we went in his car to Finningley to look for a black-winged pratincole. Stu managed to find a parking space at the end of a lane, where there were lots of other cars parked.

It was about a mile walk along the lane, until we came to a yellow barrier, where we turned right and entered a field. This was the view that we had, you can just about make out the water in the distance. We did not have to wait long for the bird to appear and how quickly it flew around catching insects. This was a new bird for me and year tick 176.

Once or twice it was mobbed by either black-headed gulls or lapwings. I tried to take some pictures, but they were no good. After about an hour we left and on the way back to the car we saw lesser whitethroat, another year tick. and then a family of black-necked grebes,. and Stu drove us to Welbeck. Here we joined other birders looking for honey buzzards. We saw red kites and common buzzard but no sign of a honey buzzard.

We then went to Stuarts house, where we saw a young cuckoo as we drove down the road to his house.

We sat in the garden and had a cup of tea and watched a pied wagtail feed its young.

I have not seen many swallows this summer, but there were plenty around the farm buildings.

Chiifchaff and whitethroat were also feeding in the garden

A pleasant day out, thanks to Stu for doing the driving.
